Jamie Beckwith’s unique wood surface treatments traditionally add panache to floors and walls, but her newest partnership with Currey and Company repurposes flooring components as ornaments for chandeliers, wall sconces, and pendants. “We wanted to create light fixtures that had the wood components on it but were designed not to feel too heavy or bulky, to feel art-like,” she says.
First, Beckwith sketched the concepts, problem solving how to best integrate light in three dimensional form. She then placed the drawings in CAD, experimenting with scale and proportion. “The unique thing about this collaboration, and the design, is that we produce and make all of the wood components that are on the lights,” she adds.
Beckwith is a female pioneer in the male-dominated industry of construction materials. She found existing options in the flooring industry to be un- inspiring, and that spurred her to create her own. “I felt like everyone was just using typical, straight plank floors,” she says. In addition to flooring and lighting accessories, Beckwith manufactures a line of wooden wall tiles and veneer wallcoverings. All wood pieces are manufactured at Beckwith’s Nashville production facility.
The modernist light fixtures in the Bijoux Bois collection pay homage to Mid-century lines. Beckwith takes her design cues from organic interiors that allow the eye to focus on artisanal statement pieces or materials. “I definitely have a more minimal aesthetic,” she says. “I also appreciate the craftsmanship of any type of product, whether it’s something that’s handmade in metalworking, or through tile, or a paint treatment. I always appreciate the craftsmanship of something rather than a mass-produced piece.”
The Honeycomb Chandelier is an up-to-date statement fixture. Inspired by the facets and bevels of fine cut jewelry, its mix of wood and sheen bring a dose of wow to any room. The Ogee Wall Sconce blends contemporary style with traditional influence, making it a great pick for a variety of décor styles.
